Safe Water for Schools Initiative

Based on the success achieved in other parts of the world, Sanctuary Retreats has expanded the Safe Water for Schools Initiative to Tanzania – delivering LifeStraw® filters to schools in Arusha, Tarangire and Ngorongoro. In May 2019, Sanctuary Retreats distributed a total of 157 LifeStraw community filters to 27 schools. Additionally, a filter was also distributed to a health center in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which treats on average 1,000 patients a day.

The Results

The program brings the LifeStraw community filter, a high-volume water purifier designed to deliver safe drinking water, to communities in Tanzania. The filter’s hollow fiber purification technology converts contaminated water into safe drinking water by removing a minimum of 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.999% of viruses and 99.99% of protozoan parasites. It prevents waterborne diseases common in Africa, such as diarrhea, typhoid, cholera, worms, and cryptosporidiosis.

To date, together with our guests, 18,000 students and teachers now have access to safe drinking water.
